At Executive Dodge Jeep® in Wallingford, CT, we want to make sure your next car fits into your lifestyle as best as possible. A great place to start is by selecting a drivetrain.
Front Wheel Drive is one of the safer drivetrains. The forward 2 wheels pull the car into motion while also controlling which direction the vehicle travels. This is the opposite of Rear Wheel Drive, where the back 2 wheels push the car forward. With the added weight of the machinery in the front of the car, FWD has better traction than RWD, especially in unfavorable weather conditions and on slick roads. Conversely, RWD is often reported being more fun to drive. This isn’t surprising, as you’ll find most sports cars with RWD like the 2017 Dodge Challenger.
If you want to go off-roading, it’d be best to consider something with either 4 Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive. They may seem like the same things as most automobiles have 4 wheels so 4 wheel drive would seem like all of them, but they are actually quite different. 4WD is more of a mode that can be engaged, in which all 4 wheels will propel the vehicle forward. When this mode is not in use, the vehicle will revert to RWD.
AWD, on the other hand, sends power to any 2 of the wheels at a time, making for optimum traction and adaptability. This comes at the cost of a heavier machine, which means slower acceleration, decreased fuel economy and increased carbon emissions. However, the all-terrain potential of AWD is second to none.
